Almost 800 years old, the city Dessau with its 83,000 inhabitants lies within the flood plains of the rivers Elbe and Mulde. Besides Magdeburg and Halle Dessau it is the third largest city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Through the work by Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus the city is world known as a "cradle of the modern". Since 1996 the Bauhaus and the Master Houses are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and since 2000 the Dessau-W�rlitzer-Garden Realm.
