Low mountain range Hunsruck in Rhineland-Palatinate

This footpath named after the Roman poet Ausonius runs from Bingen in the Hunsrück to Trier on the Moselle, following the ancient Roman military route across the ridges of the Hunsrück hills. As you pass through forests and Hunsrück villages, there are still plenty of reminders of the Roman past, both in museums and along the route. After Heidenpütz in Elzerath the footpath divides. The older Hunsrück route presented here runs for 125 kilometres across the peaks, rising and falling as it cuts through the valleys. The 140 kilometre Moselle route followed by Ausonius runs from Heidenpütz to the Moselle at Neumagen/Dhron, then follows the meandering river as far as Trier.

Start: Bingen
Finish: Trier
Length: 125km
Federal state(s): Rhineland-Palatinate
Region(s): Hunsrück
