A celebrated organist, Dietrich Buxtehude is thought to have been born in Bad Oldesloe in 1637. His glorious Abendmusik (evening music) at St. Mary's Church enjoyed wide renown; Johann Sebastian Bach made a lengthy pilgrimage to Lbeck to hear him play. It was in the shadow of the same magnificent Gothic church that Thomas Mann wrote Buddenbrooks. Buxtehude's musical legacy lives on in Lbeck, even today.
