Modern Architecture - Built for the future

New construction in Germany has many faces. Historical areas shine in futuristic lustre, bold high rises set new trends for skylines, industrial structures are transformed into foyers for arts and culture. The extraordinary creativity of internationally renowned architects manifests itself also in giant sports arenas and completely new city districts.

Berlin

A composition of the most variegated styles of contemporary architecture characterises the new political importance of Berlin in the government district. Regional building materials and stylistic elements dominate the scene, from the ribbon of government buildings to the new embassy buildings and permanent representations of the federal states. The Reichstag built from 1884-1894 and reconstructed by Sir Norman Foster is now the main seat of the federal diet. Its ingenious new cupola made it a symbol for a new tolerance in state and society.
At Potsdam square, the former traffic junction in the heart of Berlin, star architects like Meinhard von Gerkan and Renzo Piano created a fascinating ensemble of buildings where international conglomerates as well as hotels, musical theatres, the film museum and restaurants found a new home. With the Berlin Gendarmen Market Frederick the Great built the most beautiful square of the metropolis in the Italian style. Its central building is the concert hall by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, flanked to the north by the French cathedral opposite the German Cathedral.

Düsseldorf: MediaPort

On an historical area of about 200 acres art, communication, creativity and spectacular architecture have merged into an exciting mixture. Among the most striking structures are the Frank O. Gehry buildings and the new city gate. Notwithstanding all these innovations you can still feel the port atmosphere everywhere. The old commercial port with its quay walls, the stairs, its cast-iron bollards, the old cargo quay with cranes and warehouses is classified as an historical monument in Germany.

Frankfurt: Skyline

Frankfurt is the only European city with a heart of skyscrapers. Those who are lucky enough to come in by plane early in the evening see one of the most impressive cityscapes of Germany in its most spectacular aspect. The ballet of the high rises stands out delicately against the Taunus mountain ranges in the violet light of the setting sun. Gracious constructions made from steel and glass babbled with crowns and triangle peaks, designed by internationally renowned architects like Sir Norman Foster or Helmut Jahn. At present about one hundred skyscrapers form the Frankfurt skyline, with some of them rising more than 300 metres up into the sky. The bulk of these business towers concentrates in the banking district between the old opera and the main station of Frankfurt. Some of them have shops and restaurants. Those who don't suffer from vertigo find a lookout platform on the "Maintower", more than 200 m above city level.

Munich: Allianz-Arena

The new football stadium of the Bavarian state capital looks like a giant air cushion. Depending on the home team playing on the pitch the translucent cover made of diamond shaped foils glows in different colours. Because the Allianz-Arena is the new home stadium for two clubs, for FC Bayern Munich (red) and for TSV 1860 Munich (blue). During international or other matches the façade is illuminated in white. Light plays also an important role within the Allianz-Arena where you find merchandising shops and restaurants. During the day there is sunlight and at night there are the artificial colours. Like a shiny ribbon they guide the spectators from the bottom of the stairs to the top via four levels. Like a Jacob's ladder the 15 cascade-like stairs meander under the outer skin up to the top. The open construction always permits a fantastic view.
