In spring 2003, the Saxon Industrial Museum opened its current headquarters at its Chemnitz site. The museum documents 200 years of industrial and economic history in Saxony, with exhibits from times gone by to the present day.

Documenting Saxony's industrial heritage
The large exhibition halls of the Chemnitz Industrial Museum, which once housed a foundry and mechanical engineering workshops, now showcase the history of the people who played an active role in Saxony's economy. The exhibition focuses not only on the technological aspects of industrial development, it also illustrates the social conditions during the industrial era. The exhibition is structured around people; Saxons, businessmen, families, workers, inhabitants of “Karl Marx Stadt” (the GDR name for Chemnitz), inventors, consumers and Europeans.

On 4,000m� of exhibition space, a Horch Pullmann limousine, the successful DKW F7 and a Wanderer W23 with original paintwork represent the highlights of the Auto Union's output. A P70, the first passenger car with a plastic body manufactured in series production, and the Trabant 601 with its roof tent demonstrate the ingenuity of the vehicle manufacturers during the time of the GDR. A Sachsenring Uni1 prototype with a hybrid drive is an engineering masterpiece from the 1990s. Another area is devoted to drive technology in Saxony. Many exhibits are shown in operation, such as machine tools, textile and office machines, or music, games and sports equipment. There are even opportunities for the visitors to interact with the exhibits. Multimedia terminals provide additional information. A highlight of the Industrial Museum is a historically restored power house with a steam engine from 1896.
