Saxony-Anhalt
Waiting to be discovered

Castles in a hillside setting
Saxony-Anhalt with its regional capital of Magdeburg extends from the Altmark region (also known as the "cradle of Prussia"), via the Magdeburg Börde and the industrial areas around Halle and Bitterfeld as far as the vineyards in the Saale and Unstrut region, the most northerly wine growing area in Germany. The heartland of German history, this region is an ideal destination for city breaks and cultural trips, although it also has plenty to offer nature lovers and active holidaymakers.

Cities

Colourful half-timbered buildings in Wernigerode
Saxony-Anhalt's towns and cities are always worth a visit for their impressive architecture and their historical significance. There really are few other places that offer a similar variety of historical tourist attractions in such a small area, including pre-historical, medieval, Reformation and Enlightenment sites, as well as those relating to the ages of industrialisation and classical modernism. Its cathedrals and the towns associated with Martin Luther are treasure troves for cultural, educational and sightseeing tours, perfectly combining learning and leisure.

World heritage

Lakeside concert at the Wörlitz gardens near Dessau
In Saxony-Anhalt scenery, culture and history meld together to form a stunning combination. Its palaces, churches and parks are examples of superior architectural skills. The remarkable landscape gardens of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, the medieval town of Quedlinburg, the largest preservation area in Germany, and the fascinating Bauhaus "master houses" in Dessau are all listed UNESCO World Heritage sites.
