A youthful state with a turbulent history

Situated in the triangle of land near Germany's borders with France and Luxembourg is Saarland, the smallest of Germany's 16 states and the bridge to its European neighbours. The regional capital, Saarbrücken, lies on the banks of the Saar, directly on the French border. The town itself and the countryside that surrounds it have a chequered and interesting past. The fascinating contrasts are what give this region its own unique charm. The River Saar is the lifeblood that runs through the region and to which it owes its name.

This is the perfect place for anyone who enjoys walking in beautiful countryside, dense woodland and gently rolling hills, or whose idea of fun involves being in or on the water. All manner of water-based activities and sports can be enjoyed on Saarland's lakes, rivers and reservoirs. It's the ideal location for a wellness break or family holiday. Visitors can look forward to a colourful mix of culture and history, and sports ranging from golf to mountain-biking.

Saarland's towns and cities have a certain mediterranean feel. Experience the local joie de vivre at the many events or festivals. Whether prestigious boutiques or factory outlets, shopping opportunities abound. There are many museums documenting the fascinating and varied history of the region. And, as you might expect from a region so close to France, eating here is a true joy - a feast for all the senses.
