Springtime in Northern Germany - 25.03.2009

London, 25 March 2009 - Pulling coaches, racing around on lawn mowers and feeding asparagus to 1.000 people at the same time - you could be forgiven for thinking that, come springtime, they are going a bit mad up there in Lower Saxony. Germany's second biggest federal state in the north-western part of the country does not only feature a beautiful coastline, the famous Harz mountains and attractive city break destinations such as  Hanover but also events that cater for the more unusual taste.

"Boar park festival" at Springe hunting lodge

Germany's biggest asparagus feast will take place on 31 May during the "Boar park festival" at Springe near Hanover (from 29 May to 1 June). 1.000 people will be served the so-called "white gold" that is typically grown in Lower Saxony's sandy soils. Visitors more inclined towards meat, can also try the local boar piglet during the festival at the hunting lodge that is located next to a boar park and former hunting grounds of the Hanover and English.

International German Championship in coach pulling

The "Buspulling" (coach pulling) championship started 2002 in Wolfenbüttel, about 50 miles from Hanover, and has since become a local spring tradition that has spawned imitators in Austria and Switzerland. In 2008, 45 teams were watched by 12.000 visitors pulling coaches over a distance of 50 metres. This year's event will take place on 3 May and promises to be yet again a crowd puller in Northern Germany.

Lawn mower World Cup

If you're more inclined towards smaller vehicles, the "Lawn mower World Cup" on 21 May might be more your kind of thing. Racing around on lawn mower tractors started in the 90ies as a bet on the small Elbe island of Krautsand 60 miles north of Hamburg and since 1997 yearly championships have been taking place, organised by the "Krautsand Race Club". Each year on Ascension Day about 50 drivers tackle the race course on their vehicles, cheered on by about 8.000 spectators.
