Tourist Attractions in Dresden

Frauenkirche
Dresden centre of the German Baroque par excellence.

Sights:
  • The Frauenkirche was completely destroyed during WWII and reconstruction began in 1996 from a mere pile of rubble and stones. Today the rebuilding of the church's outer shape including the interior cupola finished in June 2004. The exterior cupola, known as the "stone bell", is scheduled to be finalized in time for Dresden's 800th anniversary celebrations in 2006.
  • The Semper Opera House is famous for its lavishly decorated structure and interior. The Semper is one of the most important 19th century theatre buildings in Europe.
  • The Zwinger Palace is known as the most important late Baroque building in Germany.
  • The famous Green Vault is Europe's greatest jewellery collection, a treasure of dazzling display of royal riches, breathtaking diamonds and shimmering jewels.

Beyond Dresden:

  • Meissen a legendary town for its beautiful production and making of porcelain.
  • Saxony Switzerland and the sandstone mountains are an unique phenomenon of nature and rock formations, a paradise for walkers and climbers.
  • Görlitz is an incomparably beautiful example of historical German city design and one of the most complete renaissance old towns in existence.
  • The 18th and 19th century UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and landscape of the Dresden Elbe Valley extends some 18-km along the river from Übigau Palace and Ostragehege fields in the northwest to the Pillnitz Palace and the Elbe River Island in the southeast.

Frankfurt on the river Main is with out doubt Germany's financial, banking and business capital.

Sights:
  • Historical Römer, Frankfurt's Town Hall since the 15th century.
  • Römerberg, Frankfurt's historical Old Town.
  • Alte Oper (Old Opera House), top cultural venue and concert hall.
  • Sachsenhausen is famous for its traditional cider pubs. Sachsenhausen is located on the south side of the river Main.
  • Frankfurt's modern skyscraper skyline is impressive and the only one of its kind in Germany.

Tourist Attractions in Freiburg

Freiburg is a beautiful historic town located in the southern part of the Black Forest. Visitors will quickly discover a friendly town blessed with abundant sunshine. The attractive old quarter has twisting lanes, pretty courtyards, little streams known as "Bächle", traditional restaurants and quaint bars.

Sights:
  • The cathedral (minster) on the town's square (Münsterplatz) is Freiburg's most famous landmark. Its 116 metre spire is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.
  • Freiburg's picturesque old quarter is grouped around the Münsterplatz. The Münsterplatz also hosts a huge, colourful market every weekday.
  • The Historical Merchants' Hall (Historisches Kaufhaus) was built in 1520-1532 as a customs house and storehouse for the municipal market administration. The open arcades on the ground floor face the Münsterplatz, while on the upper floor is a festivity hall. There are also two floors that were used as storehouses, with doors on the gables through which the goods were passed.
  • Schlossberg hill in the middle of Freiburg was used as a fortress by the conquering French forces between 1677 and 1744. Today, it is a very popular destination for outings with wonderful views over the town and the Dreisamtal valley.

Beyond Freiburg:

  • Kaiserstuhl wine country, full of idyllic vineyards of which each is a little paradise.
  • Black Forest, full of leisure activities, wonderful views, dark pine woods, lush green valleys and waterfalls.
  • Europa Park in Rust, one of the best and largest leisure and adventure park in Germany.
  • Across the border in France, the ancient, romantic town of Strasbourg.

Tourist Attractions in Munich

Munich the world's capital of beer.

Sights:
  • The Marienplatz (Virgin Mary Square) and Town Hall with its Glockenspiel has been the centre of Munich ever since the city's beginning.
  • The world-famous Hofbräuhaus was founded in 1589 and has since been one of Munich's most popular tourist attractions. Here, you find a little Oktoberfest throughout the whole year.
  • Munich´s famous 900-acre park, the Englischer Garten, has shaded paths, brooks, ponds and swans and is best known for its four beer gardens.
  • Schloss Nymphenburg is one of Munich's top tourist attractions, former summer residence of the Bavarian kings and birthplace of King Ludwig II.
  • The Residenz Palace is located in the heart of Munich it is an unforgettable town palace with magnificent Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo interiors.
  • Opposite the BMW headquarters is the "tent-style" Olympic Parc, site of the 1972 Olympics. This attractive landscaped park contains numerous sport facilities, lakes, cycle paths, concert venues, restaurants and a football stadium. 
  • Pinakothek der Moderne is Munich's newest museum, a truly spectacular one and one of the world's biggest museums devoted to the art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
  • In 2005 (28.4 to 09.10.2005) , Munich will be hosting BUGA, Germany's Federal Garden Show and showpiece for all lovers of flora and fauna, at Messestadt Riem, the city's former airport.

The city of Nuremberg
Nuremberg is a lively city with medieval charm.

Sights:
  • Medieval City Centre with beautiful Gothic churches, romantic rows of half-timbered buildings and sleepy cobblestoned streets and squares.
  • Nuremberg castle, or Kaiserburg, towering majestically over the Old Town of Nuremberg is one of the most important castles in the history of Germany. The Old Town and the castle itself is protected by a 5 km city wall and eighty towers.
  • The Toy Museum covers the entire spectrum of historical toys. The German Rail museum is also a favourite for children of all ages.
  • The Schöner Brunnen (beautiful fountain) with a mysterious "lucky ring".
  • The most famous Christmas Market in the world. Every year, over 2 million visitors soak up the medieval atmosphere and romance of this miniature town of Christmas stalls.

Beyond Nuremberg:

  • Bamberg is a town with an extremely rare collection of buildings that have been extensively preserved in their original historical form.
  • Regensburg is the ultimate place to step back in time, a city widely regarded as the medieval wonder of Germany.
  • Franconian Alb is an ideal location for cycle tours through some beautiful scenery.

Sights:
  • Museum of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, manufacture of the world's oldest car, famous sports cars and highly desired quality vehicles.
  • Wilhelma, Europe's largest combined zoo and botanical garden.
  • New Palace & Palace Square this large building with a distinctive French influence was built in 1746 and is located in the heart of Stuttgart. It is well known as Stuttgart's most beautiful square.

Beyond Stuttgart:

  • Ludwigsburg Palace is a large magnificent baroque building with large flower gardens and for the children there is a popular childrens playground and fairytale garden.
  • The rugged Swabian Alb is riddled with medieval towns and villages and fascinating scenery.
  • No holiday in Germany is complete without a visit to the Black Forest, here you will find breath taking sceneries of towering fir trees, rolling hills, streams and crystal clear lakes.
  • The Hohenzollern Castle is located near Hechingen it is an ancestral castle of the Prussian dynasty. It ranks among one of Europe's finest and most beautiful castles.
