Oberammergau: 817 - 1.683 m

Oberammergau village centre
Obergammerau, with its beautiful scenery and many places of interest (churches, monasteries and castles) has been a favourite tourist destination for ages.

Besides many ancient and traditional buildings, there are also plenty of modern facilities.

The town is situated in a great skiing area with the steep hills of the Laber (1,683 metres high), the Kreuzspitze and Klammespitze for the experienced skier/snowboarder and the less steep pistes of the Kolbensattel, the Kreuzspitze and Klammespitze for those with less experience.

Moreover, Obergammerau is, with its trails of 90 kilometres, an ideal destination for cross-counry skiers. It is not without a reason that Obergammerau and surroundings, is called top destination for cross-country skiers! It is known that King Ludwig Loipe leads cross-country skiers along the well-known monastery of Ettal and castly Linderhof in the Graswang valley.

Each year in the first weekend of February, Obergammerau is the meeting point for the best „volks-skiers“  in the world (more than 3,000). This weekend is better known as the international King Ludwig Lauf. Snowboarders will find a half-pipe near Unterammergau and hikers can enjoy a 35-km long hiking route.

Fun and romance are the main ingredients here: riding on the horse-sleighs, feeding wild animals and the cosy inns. Should you rather spend a snow-free day, Obergammerau and its surroundings offer enough possibilities for nice trips to see the sights such as castle Linderhof, monastery Ettal and the Wieskirche (church).

You can also see the skiing area from the air: the Laber is know as a paradise for hang-gliders and journeys in a hot air balloon can be made. Obergammerau also offers its guests various cultural options: the impressive „Passionstheatre“ with the fairy castle Ludwig II within a stone’s throw.
