The Untamed One

Map of the Isar river
Between Regensburg and Passau a river of a totally different character flows into the Danube. The Isar, one of those "wild rivers" which have largely been spared the regulating hand of man, is able to do as it pleases which makes it interesting for people who like to do as they please.

Where the Isar really lets itself go, you too can let yourself go. On the stretch of the river between Lenggries and Munich there is an almost endless programme of sports and fun activities throughout the summer. You can go rafting and canyoning, sailing, wind-surfing or kayaking. On the banks of the river you can go mountain-biking and summer-tobogganing. And if that is still too down to earth for you, you will find that the conditions here are also ideal for hang-gliding and paragliding.

Discovering Munich`s "Island Scenery"

Sunset over church towers and spires in Munich
Yes, Munich has that too: two islands in the River Isar which you should not overlook on your visit to this centre of culture and the arts where life is lived to the full. The German Museum on the Museum Island has a huge range of masterpieces from the fields of science and technology. On the "Prater" island the German Alpine Association's Alpine Museum will whet your appetite for the world of the Alps with works of arts, documents, equipment, geography and history. And in between the two islands, Munich offers you a good helping of joie de vivre in the form of the splendid art nouveau swimming pool, the Müllersches Volksbad.
