Places of interest

With its lush meadows, blue skies, a sparkling lake, healthy air and an unforgettable panorama, Bad Wiessee by Lake Tegernsee is well worth a visit at any time of year. Lake Tegernsee lies in a broad, sunny valley right on the edge of the Alps just 50 or so kilometres south of Munich. The lakeside promenade and the spa gardens are a hive of activity all year round. Tegernsee Abbey is a site of great historical significance. Water enthusiasts can enjoy a whole range of water sports in and on Lake Tegernsee. Those who prefer to keep to dry land can explore Bad Wiessee and the surrounding area on foot or by bike, or take a leisurely stroll around the lake.

Lakeside promenade/spa gardens
The car-free lakeside promenade, which runs for around five kilometres, is a fascinating nature trail and one of the region's most popular walks. Starting on the northern edge of town, it runs around the lake past the yacht club and casino to Wiessee Bay. The promenade is also used as a venue for major lakeside festivals such as the Tegernsee Valley Montgolfiade. Set right in the middle of the lakeside promenade, the sensory garden has plenty of things to smell, touch and admire. Other attractions include the 'fountain of sound' with its water plants, which is particularly helpful for blind people who can use the sound of the water to get their bearings. All of the plants have name labels that are also in braille. At the centre of the gardens is a beautiful pavilion.

Tegernsee Abbey
This yellow complex is an unmissable landmark for anyone visiting Lake Tegernsee, a place where history is brought to life. Monks and vassals from the Benedictine abbey founded in 746 settled in the valley and cultivated it. In its heyday, the area had 11,000 estates including wineries in South Tyrol and the Wachau region. The foremost library of the time was based here and the valley was made famous by scholars, professors, literary figures, musicians and composers. Today, the former abbey buildings house a restaurant and the Tegernsee Brewery's famous brewpub.

Lake Tegernsee
Lake Tegernsee's awe-inspiring mountain setting makes it a magnet for nature lovers and amateur photographers. The quality of its drinking water and its iodine-sulphur springs make it a favourite with wellness visitors too. Situated in a broad, sunny valley right on the edge of the Alps, the crystal-clear lake is surrounded by gently rolling hills and forested mountains. As a result of the Foehn weather system, a typical climatic feature along the northern edge of the Alps, the area enjoys many sunny days even in the colder winter months.
