Nature & greenery

Nature and geological evolution have both left their mark on the Tegernsee Valley, bestowing upon it striking vantage points, peninsulas, bays, hills and scenic elevated valleys. The mountains with their unique character and remarkable wealth of flora and fauna are particularly charming. Lake Walchensee is an attractive destination with exceptional diversity, while the Benediktenwand presents an exciting challenge for any climbing enthusiast.

Weissachaue
The Weissachaue conservation area to the south of Lake Tegernsee is set in one of the most beautiful valleys on the northern edge of the Alps. Its extensive and bio-diverse pastures, criss-crossed by small streams, wetlands and woodland, are particularly charming. Today, the Weissach still provides a habitat for a number of rare water-based plants and animals. Even the colourful kingfisher builds its nests along the banks of the river. This is also an ideal location for flowers such as the orchid, lady's slipper, gentian and bird's-eye primrose.

Lake Walchensee
Lake Walchensee is one of the few unspoilt lakes left in the Bavarian Alps. Surrounded by mountains, the lake with its dark blue/green water is one of the most beautiful in Upper Bavaria. Both Goethe and King Ludwig II spent time on its shores. Because of its excellent water quality, the river is well stocked with fish and attracts many anglers. The favourable wind conditions make Lake Walchensee a paradise for sailors and windsurfers, while the unspoilt beaches are ideal for swimmers and sunbathers. Its clear water also makes the lake popular with divers.

Benediktenwand
The 1,801-metre Benediktenwand is situated in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps to the north of the Jachenau between Lake Walchensee and the river Isar. Directly beneath the north face of the Benediktenwand is the Tutzinger Hütte mountain lodge (1,327m). As well as the Benediktenwand, the mountain range also includes the Achselköpfe and the Brauneck (1,555m). The usual route up the Benediktenwand runs from Benediktbeuren to the summit via the Tutzinger Hütte lodge. There are also several routes leading up to the top of the mountain from the Jachenau and the Isarwinkel. The route through Längertal valley over the Probsalm (1,376m) is particularly beautiful.
