Suggested excursions

There are lots of places to visit in the area around Lake Tegernsee. Conquering the Via Claudia Augusta is a physical challenge - as much today as it was 2,000 years ago. From the lake of kings to the lake of millionaires - Lake Starnberg has a wealth of history and stories to tell. Just what did Empress Sisi and King Ludwig II talk about at their secret meetings at Rose Island on Lake Starnberg?

Via Claudia Augusta
The history of this imperial Roman road stretches from the Adriatic over the Alps to the Danube. Cycle almost effortlessly over the Alps and follow in the footsteps of the ancient Romans as you take in a remarkable diversity of scenery, people and cultures. The Via Claudia Augusta was built by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago as the only imperial road across the Alps, and is an impressive example of how Roman road building conquered nature. As with the aqueducts, the Roman water channels, they surmounted all obstacles. Paved roads and highly developed vehicles revolutionised transport. The Romans also brought their own language and script, their form of government, religion and laws, calendar, coins and many other trappings of civilisation with them across the Alps.

Mount Wendelstein
The striking Wendelstein in the foothills of the Alps is 1,838 metres high. The famous rack-railway - the oldest in the German Alps dating from 1912 - makes it much easier to reach the top from Brannenburg. Alternatively, you can climb the mountain on foot to enjoy the spectacular views that stretch for several hundred kilometres on a clear day.

Lake Starnberg
The second-largest lake in Bavaria, Lake Starnberg is a particularly popular destination with water sports enthusiasts. During Foehn weather conditions, you can enjoy spectacular views of the mountains. King Ludwig II was a regular visitor to Lake Starnberg, making his annual trip punctually at the beginning of the spring. Other erstwhile visitors to the lake include Richard Wagner who drew his inspiration for the "Ring of the Nibelung" and the "Master Singers" here. King Ludwig II had a legendary secret rendezvous with Elisabeth, who later went on to become Empress Sisi, on Rose Island.
