Places of interest

From salt-mining village to state-approved mineral and mud spa: Bad Sassendorf is located at the heart of the Hellweg plateau in Westphalia and is well-known for its modern health treatments and recreational activities. You can forget all your cares amid the lovely half-timbered buildings and extensive spa gardens, and bathe to your heart's content in the saltwater thermal spa. Nature and garden lovers will be enchanted by the diverse range of flowers in the rose garden.

Spa gardens
The spa gardens and promenade are set at the heart of idyllic parkland. There are many sculptures and fountains dotted around the park amongst picturesque ponds, flowering rose bushes and mature trees. The rhododendron park is one of the top attractions in the gardens. A walk along the promenade takes you to Charlotte Spring where there is a ten metre high fountain in the centre of the square. Breathe in the scent of the sea at the historic salt-evaporation works.

Saltwater thermal spa
Enjoy a rejuvenating dip in therapeutic saltwater or steam your cares away in a sauna. Bad Sassendorf's saltwater thermal spa is located in the spa gardens and is supplied by its own bubbling spring which rises from the ground at a temperature of 33°C and contains enough salt to allow spa guests to float effortlessly in its waters. The new attraction at the thermal spa is the sea salt grotto where guests relax in comfortable deckchairs and breathe in valuable minerals such as iodine, magnesium and potassium, which are released into the air.

Rose garden
In the spring, summer and autumn months, visitors are drawn to the rose garden with its 12,000 rose bushes. It is divided into three themed areas - a classical rose garden, scenic rose garden and meadow with pond area where climbing roses provide the transition to the other gardens. The types of roses planted in each area are selected according to their scent, colour, growth height and how long they will last. In the gardens there are shrub roses, polyantha and floribunda roses as well as hybrid tea roses. It is an oasis for garden lovers as well as bees and butterflies.
