Nature & greenery

Bad Sassendorf and the Hellweg region are excellent destinations for hikers and sports enthusiasts all year round. The activities on offer are just as diverse as the countryside in the area. Enjoy nature at its best in and around Lake Möhnesee which is located in the Arnsberg Forest nature reserve. Potholers can explore the magnificent underground labyrinth of the Bilstein caves.

Lake Möhnesee
Lake Möhnesee in the holiday region of Sauerland is also known as the "bath tub of the Ruhr region". It is situated at the heart of the Arnsberg Forest nature reserve and is a haven for all watersports enthusiasts. There are three places on the lake which are great for swimming - at Delecke beach, the lakeside swimming area at Körbecke and the town of Wamel. Aside from watersports, visitors can enjoy countless other recreational activities such as hiking, cycling, riding, tennis and even golf.

Bilstein caves
The Bilstein caves at Warstein were discovered in 1887 by road builders. Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors come to explore the underground labyrinth of stalagmites, stalactites and other incredible structures which give the individual grottoes their names. Visitors are led through the caves on safe and easily accessible underground walkways. The show cave, which is around two kilometres in length and almost fifty metres high, is open all year round. Archaeologists have uncovered finds in the caves from the Palaeolithic era.
