Suggested excursions

Bad Bentheim offers many different activities, and a little planning will ensure you have a great holiday. You can have health treatments in the Bad Bentheim spa resort, explore flora, fauna and geology in the nearby TERRA.vita nature reserve, learn about the history of the village of "Herrlichkeit Lage" or admire historical ruins in the unspoilt countryside on the Castle Route.

TERRA.vita nature reserve
The nature reserve stretches from the great bend in the River Weser at Porta Westfalica via the town of Osnabrück to the Hahnenmoor in the Artland region, and from Bielefeld to the "canal triangle" of the Mittelland and Dortmund-Ems canals near the town of Hörstel. It was the first German nature reserve to be included in the European Geopark network. Earth and geology are common themes in different kinds of landscape, whether you're looking at traces of the dinosaurs, the Varus battle or seas and lakes. At the TERRA.vita nature reserve you can experience 300 million years of the earth's history in a single day.

The village of "Herrlichkeit Lage"
Herrlichkeit Lage near Neuenhaus is a popular tourist attraction with a great deal of history. The little village enjoyed a special status from 1605 to 1806 and even had its own jurisdiction. And all this simply because the village of Lage was forgotten in the 1648 Treaty of Westphalia. The picturesque watermill on the Dinkel river was also built around this time.

Castle Route
If you love historic buildings this is a real treat. The Castle Route between Ijssel and Ems goes through the border area between Germany and the Netherlands, past palaces, castles and manor houses. You can explore the countryside with its woods, lakes and rivers along the 575 kilometre route which passes through the Dutch regions of Twente and Vechtal and the German regions of Bentheim and Emsland.
