Gelsenkirchen - Arena Auf Schalke

Tv screen inside Gelesenkirchen's Stadium
Scheduled Work: A brand new stadium
Capacity: 51,000 Seats
Investment: €192m

The Arena Auf Schalke in Gelsenkirchen is home to the Premier Bundesliga club ‘FC Schalke 04’. The stadium is one of the most modern in Europe and has hosted the Champions league final in 2004. The stadium has been awarded 5 stars by the UEFA Stadium Committee, an award held by only 2 other German stadiums – the AOL Arena in Hamburg and Allianz Arena in Munich.

Sadly Gelsenkirchen's quarter final against Portugal proved to be the end of England's 2006 World Cup campaign, a cruel penalty shoot out decided their faith after a fiercely fought match.

Gelsenkirchen - City Highlights

Gelsenkirchen's nightscape
Gelsenkirchen is a large town (pop. 278,000), located in the heart of the industrial area called the Ruhrgebiet. The region has dramatically developed itself in recent years from an area of coalmines and smokestacks to a new environment of science and hi-tech industries.

Around Gelsenkirchen there are a wide range of activities and places to visit, some of the highlights are; Centro - Germany's biggest shopping centre, the Alpincentre - the world's longest indoor ski arena or for some real excitement why not try Movie World - a great theme park, there are also numerous interesting industrial heritage sites and museums around.
