Football in Germany

The World Cup 2006 in Germany was without doubt one of the most successful sporting events ever held, with many English fans having discovered a new world of great people and excellent stadiums. Today many fans from around Europe still return to Germany to visit their new friends and to enjoy German football at its best.  

Whether it’s a bunch of kids, father and son or group of friends having a friendly kick around, football is enjoyed by young and old throughout Germany. 

Football has become a way of life, with clubs and players being household names, each weekend, nearly 300,000 fans make the weekly pilgrimage to watch their sacred team compete, whilst millions of armchair fans enjoy the game from the comfort of their own homes.

The national team has won the World Cup as well as the European Championship 3 times, in 2006 they secured 3rd place, whilst the national women’s team beat the USA in 2003 to be crowned the champions of the Women’s World Cup.

German clubs also have a history of doing well in Europe with Bayern Munich winning the Champions League Final in 2001, 1976 & 1975, Borussia Dortmund winning in 1997 and Hamburg winning in 1983.

Bundesliga

FC Bayern v. VFB Stuttgart
The national league is split into the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga. 

Equivalent to the Premiership in the UK, the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga consists of 18 teams in each league. 

To visit one of the premier league matches is easy, tickets are often readily available through the individual club's website and prices can be incredibly low, starting at only 9,00 €.

Werder Bremen walked away as champions in the 2003/2004 season, with second place going to FC Bayern Munich who only narrowly lost with only 6 points behind. 

However things were a little bit easier for the Bavarians in the 2005/2006 season, with FC Bayern Munich emerging as champions with a narrow 5 point lead over their archrival Werder Bremen.
