Nature & greenery

Winterberg Bike Park, copyright Winterberg Tourist Information
Steep V-shaped valleys are a feature of Helletal forest park. Mount Kahler Asten's high heathland is a protected site rich in berries, herbs and grasses. Neuer Hagen is Germany's most extensive area of high heathland. The Upper Sauerland High Road guides you through the most beautiful scenery in the Rothaargebirge hills nature reserve.

Rothaarsteig trail, a walkers' paradise
The region's gently rolling countryside gave rise to the name of "the land of 1,000 hills", whereas the name "Rothaar" comes from a corruption of the German "raue Höhe" meaning craggy hill. The dense forests and ancient pathways on this mountain ridge awaken memories of childhood adventures.

The Sauerland Bike Arena and Bike Park
The woods around the Winterberg bobsleigh run in the Sauerland are home to Germany's second-largest mountainbike park. The 1,300 metre long Free Cross course has five routes to choose from, including a downhill trail for expert riders and a "nursery trail" for beginners.

The panoramic Upper Sauerland High Road
The panoramic Upper Sauerland High Road runs for 102 km, taking visitors to the most beautiful scenery and places of interest in the Rothaargebirge hills nature reserve.
