Art & culture
Art is a way of life in Quedlinburg. Contemporary art and culture evolves freely alongside the ancient crafts. The traditional craft of painting stained glass is still practised today and its history is depicted in the Museum of Stained Glass. In the Lyonel Feininger Gallery, a comprehensive collection of works by the painter and graphic artist who died in 1956 are on display. Museum of Arts, Crafts and Stained Glass
The museum is located in the "Wordspeicher", a two-storey timber-framed building built in 1650 with a steep collar beam roof. Following its refit as an accessible attraction, visitors can now experience timber-framed architecture in a remarkable way. The museum reveals the secrets and fascination of coloured glass, including the history and significance of Quedlinburg's stained glass. Workshop demonstrations and a fascinating interactive room on the theme of light and colour are great fun, particularly for younger visitors. Lyonel Feininger Gallery
Quedlinburg is home to the largest comprehensive collection of works by Lyonel Feininger, the painter, graphic artist and Bauhaus teacher. Alternating displays of prints, etchings and watercolours, mostly from his creative period up to 1937, are on show the whole year round. Three to four special exhibitions of work by contemporary artists complement the permanent exhibition.
