Museums

The museum in the North Sea Hall presents Heligoland's history and culture, the life and work of islanders in days gone by and their techniques for catching crabs and lobsters. Its exhibits include paintings, photographs and a collection of stones and fossils. A highlight is a guided tour of the museum's bunker. The island also offers public access to a further 400 metres of old underground bunkers and shelters, which run for several kilometres in total.
The plants and animals of the North Sea are presented in a series of attractive pools, including an outdoor pool with seals. One of the institute's research specialisms is the evolution of the Heligoland lobster. If female lobsters and their young are caught by fishermen, they are cared for here until the young are mature enough to fend for themselves and are able to be released.
