Nature & greenery
Eisenach is surrounded by some of the most magnificent countryside. The Thuringian Forest is considered one of the most beautiful of Germany's central highlands. The Rennsteig, one of the best-known mountain trails in Germany, and Hainich National Park are both ideal for walking and hiking. Thuringian Forest
The Thuringian Forest the "green heart" of Germany much lauded by poets and philosophers lies between the river Werra and the Thuringian Basin. Around two thirds of this highland region - which is approx. 135 km long, up to 35 km wide and whose highest peak, the Grosse Beerenberg, reaches 982 metres in altitude - is covered with emerald green forest. A large number of marked footpaths and cycle trails - and the most beautiful ridge walks in winter - are ideal for fascinating tours. Rennsteig trail
The Rennsteig is a 168 kilometre long mountain trail that runs along the ridge of the Thuringian Forest and through the adjacent Slate Mountains into the northern Franconian Forest. Pine forests alternate with beech woods, peat bogs and hill pastures. Animal lovers should keep their eyes peeled for black and yellow fire salamanders and wild boar. Hainich National Park
Hainich National Park is situated between the spa resort of Bad Langensalza and Eisenach, home of Wartburg Castle. It is Europe's largest contiguous area of mixed forest and its most common tree is the beech. More than 170 identified species of bird, as well as wild cats and bats also make it their home.
