Places of interest

In the upper part of the town you can see the remains of this Renaissance castle from 1568. Philippsburg Castle was built by Landgrave Philipp II of Hessen-Rheinfels. The medieval Marksburg Castle seemed too uncomfortable to him, so he decided to build a new residence at the foot of Burgberg hill named after himself - Philippsburg Castle. The staircase tower in the west residential section and the half-timbered gate building are still intact. Today, the castle houses the European Castles Institute with its specialist library.
Surrounded by forests and vineyards, Boppard is a charming, romantic small town with a history that stretches back more than a thousand years. The Roman fort in the heart of the town is considered to be the best-preserved late Roman fort in Germany. It was built in the first half of the fourth century AD. Covering an area of 4.7 hectares right on the banks of the Rhine, the Bodobrica fort was 154 metres wide and 308 metres long. The 8.5-metre high and 2 to 3-metre thick walls were reinforced by 28 semicircular towers, some of which have been well preserved.
Braubach's old quarter has retained much of its medieval charm. Its narrow, winding lanes and secluded spots are still lined with a number of timber-framed houses from the 16th to 18th centuries. Other attractions include the early Gothic St. Barbara's Church and St. Martin's, the oldest church in Braubach. It was first mentioned around the year 1000 as one of the churches of the St. Kastor seminary in Koblenz.
