Visitors to Gifhorn near Wolfsburg will discover the international windmill and watermill park, the only one of its kind in the world. At the centre of the site is the museum hall which is 800 square metres in size. This is where around 45 miniature windmills and watermills from around the world are displayed, reproduced true to scale and with great attention to detail. You can also admire full-size replicas in the museum's extensive grounds.
Henry the Lion (1129-1195) loved this town and made it his royal seat. The town's charm lies in the mix of old and new such as the clusters of old buildings sitting alongside modern constructions. A walk through the town following in the footsteps of former Kings will lead you to the bronze palace lion, erected in 1166 by Henry the Lion as a symbol of his power. Another place of interest is the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral of St. Blasius.
The former university and Hanseatic town of Helmstedt has a rich history. The townscape is characterised by many impressive half-timbered buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries. One famous landmark is the Juleum Novum, a magnificent building constructed in a late-Renaissance style which used to be the main assembly hall and auditorium of the former university. Those with an interest in history can take a guided tour to former border installations in the surrounding area.
