Suggested excursions

The highest mountain range north of the Main River, with Mount Brocken reaching a height of 1,142 metres, the Harz is a magnificent mountain region, a combination of wide plateaus 600 metres and more in altitude, a central highland region whose rocky peaks form bizarre shapes, mountain lakes, high moorland and deeply valleys like ravines. The mountain streams, waterfalls and large reservoirs here offer virtually every kind of water sport imaginable. Discover unspoilt nature on the numerous marked trails. On Walpurgis Night (1 May), witches convene on the mysterious Mount Brocken, the region's highest peak.
Magnificent, colourful timber-framed houses spanning five centuries are the hallmarks of the "colourful Harz town". The Kleinstes Haus (smallest house) and the Schiefes Haus (crooked house) are particularly appealing curiosities. The historical town hall is a pearl of medieval architecture. The castle, an opulent neo-Gothic building with 800 years of history, looms high above the narrow alleys and picturesque corners of the old town. From there the view sweeps up to Mount Brocken.
The abundance of water in the Harz often caused severe floods in the Bode Valley and the Harz foothills, which is why the Bodewerk system of dams was built. The Rappbodetal reservoir is the pivotal piece at a length of 415m and a height of 106m it is the largest reservoir in Germany. The dam wall can be crossed on foot or by car. In the nearby Wendefurth reservoir, also connected to the system, tours inside the dam walls are run from April to October.
