Nature & greenery

Meissen is a beautifully situated town on the German Wine Route in the gently rolling Elbe valley, where romantic wine-growing villages nestle against the vineyard slopes. The Saxon Wine Route, Saxony Wine Trail and Elbe Cycle Route all run parallel to the river Elbe through some of the most amazing scenery. The ideal place for visitors to experience nature at its best - on foot, by bike or on a leisurely tour by historical paddle steamer.

Siebeneichen Zoo
Siebeneichen zoo is in the middle of a forest on a slope overlooking the river Elbe. It is home to a number of pet species as well as many exotic animals including rheas, wallabies, arctic foxes, skunks, American red squirrels, racoons, ravens and snowy owls. Other birds include pheasants, ducks, owls and parakeets. There is also a children's petting zoo with guinea pigs, rabbits and miniature sheep.

Saxony Wine Trail
Germany's smallest wine-growing region is situated in the heart of Saxony between Pirna and Diesbar-Seusslitz near Meissen. Wine has been produced here for more than 800 years in the mild climate of the upper Elbe valley. The Saxon Wine Route runs right through the middle of this region, along with the 90-km Saxony Wine Trail. You'll find a number of cosy taverns to stop off at along the way.

River Elbe
After leaving the Czech Republic, the home of its source, the river Elbe carves its way through the bizarre landscape of the Elbe Sandstone Massif. It then flows through an area of gently rolling hills with romantic wine-growing villages and impressive castles. The Elbe Cycle Route runs along the banks of the river, passing a wealth of wonderful scenery as well as places of artistic, cultural and historical interest. One of the special highlights on offer is a trip on a historical paddle steamer.
