Suggested excursions

If you have the chance to go further afield, there are some fantastic attractions in the region around Meissen. The baroque city of Dresden - a definite highlight of Europe's cultural scene - is just a stone's throw away.

Dresden
The city's cultural scene blends the traditional and the modern. The Elbe Valley around Dresden, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts lush meadows, magnificent villas and majestic palaces. The city has positively flourished in the last few years and its new architectural masterpieces are attracting international acclaim. The recently restored Frauenkirche, Church of Our Lady, is a highlight of any visit to the city.

Karl May Museum in Radebeul
Karl May is one of the best-known literary figures in Germany. The heroes of his books - Winnetou in particular - still have the same appeal as ever. The Karl May Museum presents two remarkable exhibitions: "North American Indians" at the Villa Bärenfett is one of the most extensive ethnological collections on the subject of Native Americans in Europe, while "Karl May - Life & Works" at the Villa Shatterhand illustrates the life of Karl May. Highlights include an authentic reconstruction of the writer's study, his personal library, souvenirs from his travels around the world and Winnetou's famous silver rifle.

Moritzburg Palace
The baroque palace of Moritzburg, which sits in a lake, much like an island, is one of Dresden's most charming recreation spots. In the 18th century, it was used as a hunting lodge by Augustus the Strong. The palace's collection of beautiful baroque leather wallpaper is second to none. The palace terrace is adorned with a number of sandstone statues dating from the 18th century.
