Art & culture

The medieval Welfenburg (or 'Guelph castle') was converted into a hunting lodge in 1590. In 1747, the Duke of Brunswick ordered the now famous porcelain factory to be established here, making Fürstenberg the second-oldest porcelain manufactory in Germany after Meissen. The lodge complex is a listed site of historical interest, built in a typical Weser Renaissance style, and houses North Germany's only porcelain museum. The three hundred years of porcelain history in Fürstenberg come together here in both historical and contemporary collections.
The castle museum holds special exhibitions of arts and crafts. The museum's permanent exhibition entitled 'Wall of Fame' is a particular highlight: at the EXPO 2000, all the Heads of State in attendance left a lasting impression literally. The representatives each pressed a hand into the finest Fürstenberg porcelain.
