The medieval Welfenburg (or 'Guelph castle') was converted into a hunting lodge in 1590. In 1747, the Duke of Brunswick ordered the now famous porcelain factory to be established here, making Fürstenberg the second-oldest porcelain manufactory in Germany after Meissen. The lodge complex is a listed site of historical interest, built in a typical Weser Renaissance style, and houses North Germany's only porcelain museum. The castle museum holds special exhibitions of arts and crafts. The museum's permanent exhibition entitled 'Wall of Fame' is a particular highlight: at the EXPO 2000, all the Heads of State in attendance left a lasting impression – literally. The representatives each pressed a hand into the finest Fürstenberg porcelain.
