The Westerwald region is bordered to the south by the river Lahn and the Nassau nature reserve where you'll find the town of Nassau and the ruins of the castle which gave the princes of Nassau their name. An absolute highlight of any trip along the river Lahn is a visit to the small town of Limburg, situated in the fertile basin between the Taunus hills and Westerwald forest. Its old quarter is full of picturesque half-timbered buildings and dominated by the late Romanesque cathedral with its seven towers. Parts of the castle once owned by the Counts of Lahn date back to the 13th century. The Westerwald region also has a number of attractive health resorts such as Rengsdorf, Ehlscheid and Bad Marienberg, whose main attractions include a Kneipp hydrotherapy spa and a basalt park. In Bad Ems, where great world figures such as Tsar Alexander II of Russia once mingled, the 19th-century spa buildings and Russian church with its onion domes serve as reminders of the town's former glory. Visitors interested in history can follow in the footsteps of St. Elisabeth in Marburg and soak up the atmosphere of this lively university town.

Other destinations well worth a visit include Amöneburg, once ruled by the electors of Mainz, the town of Neustadt which features the world's largest half-timbered circular building - the Junker Hansen Tower - and one of Hessen's smallest half-timbered churches in Steffenberg-Quotshausen. Not far from the small medieval town of Hachenburg is the 750-year-old Cistercian abbey of Marienstatt with its steam beer brewery. In Daaden, you'll find Germany's oldest herb farm. Visitors to the Erzbergland region can take a fascinating ride on the pit express into the Grube Bindweide mine. Exploring the wonderful Westerwald region by motorbike is also guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience. There is so much to see and do here, it seems a shame to have only one pair of eyes. The people of the Westerwald region look forward to your visit.
