For a bird's eye view, gliding enthusiasts can visit one of the region's five airfields and soar through the air as if they too had wings. There are plenty of classical concerts on offer at a variety of venues including a palace grounds, a baroque hall, a castle, a half-timbered barn and a wonderfully restored village church. You can also enjoy open-air blues and jazz concerts at venues such as the Schlosspark with its magical illuminations.
In the southern part of the region, in the Hessian valley, is the area known as the Wetterau. This is a fertile area of land with extensive mineral deposits and medicinal spring water. The saline spa in Bad Salzhausen offers the perfect blend of charming natural scenery and beneficial treatments. The traditional orchards are still an important element of this cultivated landscape. The extensive network of footpaths and cycle trails is an ideal way for visitors to explore the picturesque landscape and local places of interest.

Münzberg Castle is the Wetterau's famous landmark. Alongside Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, it is one of the foremost high medieval castles in Germany. It once belonged to Kuno von Münzberg, one of Emperor Barbarossa's henchmen. There are also a number of other magnificent stone and half-timbered buildings, outstanding ecclesiastical buildings, towers, churches and abbeys that are well worth a visit. Picturesque old quarters are the architectural jewels of the region's villages and towns. Many castles and palaces, most of which were built during the rule of the Hohenstaufen family, stand as reminders of the secular power of days gone by.
All in all, the region is a paradise for young and old, for the active and those in search of gentler ways to relax, for keen historians and amateur geologists. There are also plenty of delicious regional specialities to sample, including the favourite local tipple, cider. You're bound to meet some people with interesting stories to tell - especially the sagas and legends of the Vogelsberg hills and Wetterau region.
