Annual Rennsteig races have been held for the past 100 years or so, not only in summer but also for skiers in the winter. This is a superb destination all year round. Hundreds of kilometres of cross-country ski trails are prepared around the mountain villages. The Rennsteig's 168 kilometres give hikers plenty of opportunity to explore the nature and history of the area. As well as the beauty of the landscape, there is also the warm hospitality of local people to enjoy.
It really makes no difference whether you start off in Hörschel or in Blankenstein. The Rennsteig has so much to offer that you will always find something new to capture your imagination, even if you've done the route before or perhaps in the opposite direction. For anyone who loves nature, it's like a dream that never ends. There are idyllic beauty spots all around and you're always very well looked after, which makes the hiking even more enjoyable.

If you enjoy Nordic walking, put on your walking shoes, strap up your rucksack, reach for your poles and you're all set. For a hearty packed lunch, call in at a country butcher's and ask what he recommends. Smoked Thuringian blood sausage or fresh roast meat will taste delicious in the great outdoors. Where you stop for a break is up to you, but there's certainly no shortage of quiet spots with fabulous views. You'll find Thuringian dumplings and Thuringian bratwurst on the menu at most good restaurants in the area.
The Rennsteig region has many different facets, among them nature, adventure, culinary specialities, castles and towns and countryside. Whichever aspect you choose to explore, one thing is certain: you'll never run out of things to do and places to see.
