The region can be easily explored on Shank's pony, as well as by bike, on horseback, by carriage or paddleboat. Virtually level with far-reaching views, many rivers, lakes and canals, and a wealth of attractions, it is ideal for cycling tours. With an extensive network of stables and bridle paths throughout the whole region and a number of horse-riding schools, Lüneburg Heath is a real Mecca for keen riders.
The heath is also great for families with children. Few other places can offer such a diverse range of attractions and rides with a number of theme parks, game parks and zoos, including the Heide Park, Serengeti Park, Bird Park and Otter Centre. Lüneburg Heath offers a fantastic mix of scenic beauty, thrills and excitement for visitors of all ages.

Amidst the unspoilt countryside full of rare plants and grasses, dunes and erratic boulders, you'll also find reminders of a rich and colourful history. There are megalithic graves and tumuli from the Stone Age, and historic towns that have retained much of their original charm and monuments to their former glory. Lüneburg became wealthy in the Middle Ages as a result of its salt water and salt production, making it the "Queen of the Hanseatic League". This is still very much in evidence today in the façades of the colourful town houses.
Wherever you go in Lüneburg Heath, you can still soak up the medieval atmosphere as you stroll along the charming streets. A variety of artefacts covering every period in history can be found at the region's castles, palaces, manor houses, churches and abbeys. For example, you can visit one of the heath abbeys in Ebsdorf, Isenhagen, Lüneburg, Medingen, Walsrode and or Wienhausen dating from the 11th-13th century, a period during which a great many abbeys were founded. Inside these impressive abbey buildings, you'll find priceless works of sacred and secular art.
