Art & culture

Ulm University has gained a new reputation, this time among art lovers, thanks to the art trail in the university grounds north-west of Ulm. It is an extensive circular trail, unlike any other in the world, featuring some 60 works of art. There are large-scale sculptures and murals by artists - some young, some better known - including Niki de Saint-Phalle.
The Stadthaus was built in 1993 right opposite the late-Gothic minster, its modern architecture providing a dramatic contrast. Designed to be a walk-through sculpture by New York architect Richard Meier, the Stadthaus is a cultural and information centre for local people.
This museum on Petrusplatz is devoted to the painter and sculptor Edwin Scharff, who was born in Ulm at the end of the 19th century. Sculptures are the focal point, but there are also drawings and watercolours on show.
