Art & culture

Braunschweig has a diverse and interesting cultural scene. Whether you enjoy concerts, museums or the theatre, the town has something for everyone. Music and theatre once turned Braunschweig into one of Germany's cultural centres. In 1772 the first significant bourgeois tragedy written in the German language - Gotthold Lessing's Emilia Galotti - was premièred at the opera on Hagenmarkt square. This was followed in 1829 by Part I of Goethe's Faust. The multi-coloured "Happy RIZZI House", designed by the artist James Rizzi, is also well worth a visit.

Duke Anton Ullrich Museum
This museum is one of the largest art museums in Europe as well as being the oldest one in Germany. It houses Germany's fourth largest Old Masters Gallery and contains sculptures and artwork from ancient times up to the early modern age, all of them collected by the Dukes of Braunschweig. There is also a collection of prints containing artwork from the Middle Ages to the present day. The valuable paintings are examined and restored in the museum's fully equipped workshop.

Happy RIZZI House
The Happy RIZZI House is located at the edge of the historical Magni quarter and was designed and created by the famous New York artist James Rizzi. The multi-coloured towers took two years to build. These unconventional buildings are currently being used as office blocks. There are also guided tours available which give an insight into this unusual architectural sculpture.

Braunschweig Art Association
The Braunschweig Art Association (Kunstverein), founded at the end of the 19th century, is one of the most prestigious in Germany and a leading forum for contemporary art. Five times a year it holds special exhibitions on international contemporary art in the neo-classical Salve Hospes villa.
