Suggested excursions

The state of Braunschweig is one of the most interesting areas in Germany in terms of history and geology. To the North the region is bordered by the Lüneburg Heath, and in the south by the Harz mountains. Beautiful countryside and lush forests are just waiting to be explored. A trip to the nearby VW Autostadt automotive exhibition complex in Wolfsburg is also a great day out. If you are interested in exploring mills and learning about their history, the Lower Saxony Mills Route is for you.

Harz Mountains
The Harz mountains, which rise up above the North German Plain, are not only ancient but also the highest mountain range north of the river Main. The Harz is a magnificent landscape, a combination of wide plateaus, a central highland region whose rocky peaks form bizarre shapes, mountain lakes and deeply valleys like ravines containing mountain streams and waterfalls, as well as dripstone caves and reservoirs. The Harz mountains provide the perfect environment for all kinds of sporting activities and you can enjoy stunning views across the region from Mount Brocken, their highest peak.

VW's "Autostadt", Wolfsburg
The Autostadt is an automotive exhibition complex, located right next to the Volkswagen factory. It was opened in 2000 as an external project for the Hannover EXPO and has been visited by several million people since then. The park consists of the ZeitHaus, where visitors can go on a journey back in time and learn about the development of the automobile, as well as different pavilions containing new and historical models from the various car makers that are part of the Volkswagen Group. Kids can learn the basics of driving in the specially designed LernPark and even get their own driving licence.

Lower Saxony Mills Route
The Lower Saxony Mills Route is around 250 km long and runs from the Teufelsmoor region via the eastern lowlands to the Südheide (Southern Heath). The mills along the route used to mill grain from the surrounding areas, press oil and grind rags for paper manufacture. Today these have been lovingly converted into homes or have become fully functioning modern mills. The international mill park in Gifhorn really is worth a visit as it is the only one of its kind in the world.
