Art & culture

Bielefeld's rich cultural scene can be experienced through its diverse calendar of events which take place everywhere - on its streets and squares and in its bars, cafés and theatres. The Museum of Art has an important collection of 20th and 21st century art, with an additional collection provided by the Waldhof Museum.

Museum of Art
The Museum of Art was built between 1966 and 1968 by the renowned American architect Philip Johnson and is the only European museum building designed by him. Inside the red sandstone cube are exhibits on 20th and 21st century art including pieces by Picasso, Sonia and Robert Delaunay, Max Beckmann und Man Ray. The exhibition also includes works by Bridge and Blue Rider artists, works from the constructivist movement of the 1920s with artists such as Laszlo Moholy-Nagy and Oskar Schlemmer, as well as examples of American and German art from the 1970s and 1980s. In the grounds of the museum there are sculptures by Rodin, Serra, Schütte and Eliasson.

Waldhof Museum
In the Waldhof Museum the Bielefeld Art Association (Kunstverein) exhibits contemporary art from the disciplines of painting, sculpture, photography and drawing. The museum also has an additional collection in a former Bielefeld stately home as part of the Museum of Art's range of exhibits. The beautiful inner courtyard is where sculptures are displayed and also where the Art Association holds musical and artistic events.
