Events

Throughout the year in Amberg there are fairs, exhibitions, festivals, evenings of traditional music, open-air concerts and, particularly in the summer months, annual church fairs or "Kirwa" as they are known. At the end of the year the Christmas market is the crowning finale to the Amberg calendar of events. You can enjoy the build-up to the festive season under the glow of the Christmas lights, against the fabulous backdrop of the town hall and St. Martin's Church.

Old town festival
The old town festival usually takes place on the weekend before the mountain festival (Bergfest). You can enjoy all kinds of live music in the open air. There are performances by different dance troupes together with a flea market and clown theatre. Come and spend a while wandering amongst the countless food and drink stalls set up down all the streets and alleyways and feast on all kinds of delicious things.

Mountain festival (Bergfest)
Every year from the last Saturday in June Mariahilfberg is packed with visitors from Amberg and other places near and far who want to celebrate the week-long Bergfest. The origins of this religious festival date back to 1634 when the plague was raging across the country and the people of Amberg built a church which soon became a popular place of pilgrimage. Several church services are held daily throughout this Christian festival.

Whitsun and autumn fairs
The Whitsun and autumn fairs were originally church fairs - stalls were set up around churches, selling goods in honour of a particular saint. As time went on this developed into a kind of festival. The residents of Amberg celebrate both the Whitsun and autumn fairs when there are lots of fairground rides, a festival tent where you can enjoy live music, and stalls selling food such as bratwurst.
