Nature & greenery

The fossil-rich deposits of the Jura mountains make up the rich geology of this region. Besides the fossils, there are also traces of earlier periods in the earth's history such as the Tertiary and Quaternary eras, as well as volcanism and meteorites. Where sheep now graze peacefully amongst juniper bushes, millions of years ago lava hissed towards the sky. The Alb was once one of the most volcanic regions on earth. Today, the valuable treasures which this landscape has hidden beneath its surface since primeval times gush out in the form of mineral springs, used to treat a range of illnesses.
A Mediterranean atmosphere, colours, scents and a thousand and one splendours - there is something new to be experienced on the island of Mainau everyday. Palm trees, orchids and other exotic treasures flourish here. In the spring there are beds of tulips as far as the eye can see. But Mainau island is also a sanctuary for rare local plants and animals. Its world-famous botanical gardens, exotic butterfly house, nurseries and wood make the whole island a unique educational centre as well as a popular place for day trips.
This 216 km cycle route is delightful at any time of the year. In the spring you can cycle past the lake and through scented orchards and meadows, in the summer combine cycling with swimming, in the autumn you can enjoy the fabulous view of the nearby mountains and in winter, when there's no snow on the ground of course, you'll finally have the lake to yourself.
