Art & culture

Überlingen's heyday was between the 13th and 16th centuries. The main reason for this period of economic prosperity was the intensive wine production, cultivated on the sunny south-facing slopes on the shores of Lake Constance. With its own natural mineral springs, Überlingen experienced a new boom in the 19th century when spas became the height of fashion. The region also has much to offer in terms of culture, with the Monastic Island of Reichenau, the open-air museum at Unteruhldingen and the Federsee Marsh Museum providing insights into the life and culture of earlier times in the Lake Constance region.

Monastic Island of Reichenau
The Monastic Island of Reichenau is a UNESCO world heritage site. The well-preserved churches are excellent examples of monastic architecture from the 9th to 12th centuries. The carefully restored wall painting in the church of St. George has turned Reichenau island into a centre of great importance for the European history of art from the 10th and 11th centuries.

Archaeological open-air museum in Unteruhldingen
The museum and prehistoric pile village at Unteruhldingen, founded in 1922, lies on the northern shore of Lake Constance, on the border with the "Seefelder Aachniederung" nature conservation area. The open-air museum is made up of four reproductions of villages containing different pile constructions from the stone and bronze ages (4000 - 850 BC). You can clearly see how life must have been centuries ago for the pile builders in these villages.

Federsee Marsh Museum
This Upper Swabian Federsee Marsh Museum is surrounded by a fascinating landscape of moors. It lies on the edge of a marsh which has silted up since the ice age and is surrounded by reeds. In these 45km² of marshland, which is unlike anywhere else in Europe, you can find lots of examples of well preserved hunters' camps, moor settlements and pile buildings from prehistoric times. The museum contains internationally important finds relating to over 14,000 years of human history.
