Suggested excursions

The climatic and hydrotherapy health resort of Oberstdorf not only provides a healthy place for rest and relaxation but also limitless opportunities for walking and daytrips to places in the enchanting surrounding area. Whether you want to walk beside a fast-flowing mountain stream, travel to dizzy heights with breathtaking panoramic views or visit fairytale forests, it's all right on your doorstep.

Western Allgäu "Cheese Route"
This culinary route is a 50 kilometre round trip through breathtaking scenery in the foothills of the alps, on the trail of cheese-making between the Illertal valley and Lake Constance. Along the route are some very cosy inns, alpine dairies, cheese dairies, breweries and distilleries which can all be discovered quite comfortably on foot or by bike. You can watch cheese being made at almost all the alpine dairies.

Sturmann's cave
Sturmann's cave is the only easily accessible natural cave in the upper Allgäu region. For a long time only stories and rumours were told about Sturmann's cave in the town of Obermaiselstein. This is where the cave spirits "Maringga, Tschudre Mudre and Stuzze Muzz" got up to no good, and a cave dragon and many other evil spirits used the dark and gloomy cavern as their home. Today there are safe paths through the 120 million year old rock formations, past high rock chimneys, over crevices and the rushing waters of the cave.

Lake Constance
Lake Constance, which is named after the largest town on the lake, covers an area of 538 square kilometres and lies in a basin between the Alps and the Jura mountains. The mild climate means that lush, mediterranean vegetation can flourish here and the whole area is an excellent fruit-growing and wine-producing region. Against the backdrop of the alps in the summer the countless white and colourful boats give a mediterranean atmosphere to Lake Constance.
