Art & culture

Many different kinds of people have settled in Boppard, especially during the Middle Ages, and you can find fascinating traces of these different cultures in the town. Cultural and historical monuments evoke a variety of historical eras. Castles, abbeys and churches bear eloquent witness to the past and elegant half-timbered buildings and charming villas from the time of Romanticism on the Rhine are distinctive features of the townscape. You can gain insights into Boppard's turbulent history at the Roman fort and the Municipal Museum and enjoy the best that the Rhine Valley has to offer on the trail of ancient myths and legends.

Roman fort
This Roman fort was built during the first half of the 4th century. Inside the fort were large, two-aisled half-timbered structures eleven metres long and five metres wide which presumably provided accommodation for the garrison. According to historical sources the Roman forces left the fort in 406 when it became a purely civilian settlement. Boppard therefore has the best preserved Roman town wall in Germany. This and the uninterrupted settlement since Late Antiquity have made Boppard an outstanding site of cultural heritage.

Boppard Municipal Museum
Boppard Municipal Museum is currently housed in the 14th century castle with its huge residential tower. The town's history can be traced back to the Stone and Bronze Ages. Texts and pictures explain the development of Celtic settlements right up to the withdrawal of the Roman legionnaires. Roman exhibits and a model of the former fortress spa are reminders that the castle was once a military base on the Rhine Road. The centrepiece of the museum is a collection of bentwood furniture by the carpenter and furniture maker Michael Thonet.

Legend of the Loreley
The region around the Rhine and the central Rhine Valley is famous for its many myths, sagas and legends. The myth of the Loreley also still lives on. The narrowness of the valley, the untamed river waters and the mysterious echo all play their part in a legend that is as old as time itself. The Loreley, a blonde siren, would sit on the rock here at the Rhine's narrowest point and lure sailors to their death with her beguiling song and mysterious beauty. Nowadays the Loreley open-air theatre hosts rock, pop and folklore events.
