This historic salt mine has been in operation since 1517. When Berchtesgaden was still under the rule of the Prince-Provosts, only a chosen few could enter the mine. Now this amazing underground world is visited by around 400,000 people every year who want to learn a little about how the "white gold" was mined in the past and in more recent times. Experienced miners take visitors deep underground on fascinating guided tours packed with information. And there's plenty of adventure too! Wearing traditional mining gear visitors can travel along the pit railway deep into the mountain. The journey continues down long slopes, through dark tunnels and past shimmering salt grottos to a mysterious luminescent lake. Gliding silently across the lake in a raft accompanied by a mysterious light show and strange sounds is one of the highlights of the one-hour trip.
This is a place for water lovers of all ages to experience the magic of water - it's a paradise for all the senses. The attractive spa and pool complex is set in stunning surroundings and has around 900 square metres of pools which guarantee fun in the water for the whole family. There's something for everyone. For example there's an adventure pool with a counter-current section, a large mother-and-toddler area, indoor and outdoor brine pools with a cascade and brine garden, brine steambath tunnels, salt grottos, a large sauna area with wood cabins, infrared cabin and a saunarium with coordinated light, fragrances and colours.
As unmistakable as the Matterhorn above the village of Zermatt in Switzerland, Mount Watzmann, at 2,173 metres high, and its adjoining peaks make up Berchtesgadener Land's most famous landmark. The massif has a varied landscape of towering peaks and imposing rock faces. The nearly 2,000 metre high east face slopes down to Lake Königssee from the southern peak of the massif and is the highest rock precipice in the eastern alps. It remains to this day a great challenge for mountaineers.
