Nature & greenery

Meadows, ravines and wooded hillsides make up the pleasant rhythm of Bad Wildungen's fascinating landscape. You'll be hard pushed to find a more unspoilt area of countryside than the Kellerwald-Edersee nature reserve. With its rich variety of plant and animal life, Lake Edersee is the jewel of the national park. The Eder scenic route runs along one of Hessen's most picturesque rivers through the mysterious Eder Valley.

Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Reserve
Covering an area of 400km², the Kellerwald-Edersee nature reserve is a fascinating landscape shaped by both Mother Nature and man. A number of walks and trails take visitors through areas of sprawling woodland with a wealth of rare animals and plants such as the Cheddar pink. If you are lucky, you might also catch a glimpse of owls, black storks, racoons, ravens, red deer, fallow deer and European mouflon. Narrow streams lead to meadows filled with colourful flowers, steep sun-drenched slopes, and a wealth of quaint villages and other attractions.

Lake Edersee
A paradise for water lovers. Blue-green and fjord-like, Lake Edersee meanders its way through a deep valley in the north of the Kellerwald forest. The "blue eye" of the nature reserve, the lake was created when the river Eder was dammed in 1908-1914. With its excellent water quality and a number of attractions along its shores, Lake Edersee is a popular destination for people of all ages who come here to swim, windsurf, dive, sail and fish. In the late summer, when some of the water is drained from the lake, it is also an excellent place for budding explorers.

Eder scenic route and Eder riverbank cycle path
Explore the tranquil banks of the river Eder on two wheels or on Shank's pony along the Eder scenic route or the Eder riverbank cycle path that runs in parallel - for a total of 180 kilometres. These largely traffic-free and level routes both run along the river Eder through the Waldecker Land region. The ideal way to enjoy the healthy fresh air while recharging your batteries and a chance to get up close to nature, travelling up hill and down dale on two wheels. In addition to the many attractions along the way, there are also plenty of spots along the riverbank where you can sit down on the soft, green grass for a rest and dangle your tired feet in the clear, refreshing water.
