Places of interest

The state-approved spa and health resort of Bad Dürkheim is situated in the area with the mildest climate north of the Alps, nestling between the Palatinate Forest nature reserve and the vine-clad hills of the German Wine Route. Gently rolling vineyards, lush fruit orchards, tranquil forests and mediterranean climate together with the joie de vivre and hospitality of the local people, a history going back more than 1,000 years and a great deal more besides make this a perfect destination whether you are looking for health treatments, wine or a relaxing holiday.

Spa centre
This elongated, neo-classical building with pointed gables was built between 1822 and 1826 on the foundations of the Counts of Leiningen's palace which burnt down in 1794. The architecture of the spa centre is of the Weinbrenner school in Karlsruhe. Nowadays there is a restaurant and casino on the ground floor whilst the first floor has grand function rooms where cultural events are staged. A fountain in honour of Valentin Ostertag, a great patron of Bad Dürkheim stands opposite the spa centre.

Bad Dürkheim's giant wine barrel
Bad Dürkheim is in the record books for the "Dürkheimer Fass" - the largest wine barrel in the world which could hold up to 1.7 million litres. It was built in 1934 by Fritz Keller, a winemaker and cooper, but has never actually been filled with wine. Inside it there is a rustic-style wine bar and restaurant. The interior is just as barrel-like as the outside, with skilfully carved oak barrel ends hanging on the walls illustrating the art of wine making. In summer you can sit outside in the wine garden in the shade of the giant cask.

Limburg Abbey ruins
A breathtaking place just outside Bad Dürkheim where the ruins of this old Benedictine abbey dominate the valley. The atmospheric ancient walls provide a stunning backdrop for summer concerts and theatrical performances. Enjoy the magnificent view of the town from the ruins and then linger over a meal in the Klosterschänke restaurant.
