There's always plenty of cheer in the Palatinate. Although Bad Dürkheim did not invent carnival celebrations, it has its fair share of festivals from the carnival parades before Shrove Tuesday until the start of the wine festival season. The Bad Dürkheim Wurstmarkt (literally, sausage market) is well over 500 years old, and has been made famous by wine rather than sausages. Songs and poems have been written about it, countless pictures of it painted, it has been immortalised in any number of memoirs and is known far and wide. When it's cold outside and the nights are drawing in, candlelight heralds the festive season. Forget the stress of preparing for Christmas and savour the sense of anticipation - at the Bad Dürkheim Christmas market. During Advent from the end of November until shortly before Christmas Eve you can enjoy a relaxing stroll around 20 or so seasonally decorated stalls lit with fairy lights. You'll find a tempting range of food and drink there, together with a children's train ride on Römerplatz square to keep younger visitors entertained.
