Art & culture

The town not only has much to offer in the way of health and fitness but also caters for cultural interests. For example, there is a museum devoted to the works of the sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch. In the local history museum there are exhibits on village life in the past.

Local History Centre in Helsen
The Local History Centre in the village of Helsen documents village life from centuries past. There are collections of pictures, rural household objects and flags. The focal point of the centre are the "great sons of Helsen", the star trumpeter Walter Scholz and the famous surgeon August Bier, who has a room devoted to him. A collection of historical agricultural tools and machinery collected by Friedhelm Eisenberg are exhibited in a separate building.

Christian Daniel Rauch Museum
Housed in five historical buildings in the former seat of the Princes of Waldeck, the museum is spread between the palace and royal stables and buildings used by officials, craftsmen and footmen. On a tour through the museum you will learn about the baroque planned town, a new district of Arolsen constructed at the start of the 18th century that remarkably has survived virtually intact. Through work by the sculptor himself and by other contemporary artists from the time of Goethe, the Christian Daniel Rauch Museum illustrates the development of German and international sculpture in the 19th century.

Wasserkunst pumping works in Landau
The historical pumping works in Landau supplied drinking water to the hill town, which lies 65 metres above sea level. The spring water is pumped via wooden pipes to a vessel in the marketplace by a pump-driven mill wheel. The Wasserkunst pumping works were in use from 1535 to 1981. They were later modernised by a preservation society. This technical monument offers an insight into how drinking water was supplied in centuries past.
