Suggested excursions

Lake Edersee, one of the largest reservoirs in Europe, is set in a beautiful location surrounded by forests and mountains, making it a top tourist destination. The high water quality and wealth of fish means that the lake is especially popular with swimmers and anglers. The flat beaches, large sunbathing lawns and high number of watersports schools make it a paradise for all water enthusiasts. Waldeck Castle, the region's most famous landmark, these days houses a five-star hotel and a variety of restaurants. The castle's viewing platform provides wonderful views across the surrounding area, including Lake Edersee and the Kellerwald-Edersee nature reserve.
In Bad Arolsen the baroque royal palace, which dates from the 18th century, is well worth visiting. The palace houses two libraries and exhibitions on contemporary and historical art. There is also a museum devoted to the neo-classical sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch, who lived and worked in Bad Arolsen. One of the cultural highpoints of the year is the annual baroque festival.
This 1,000 year old town is worth visiting just to see the old quarter with its lovely half-timbered buildings. You also shouldn't miss the Church of St. Kilian with its decorative south portal or the well-preserved town walls.
