Shopping

Wernigerode's wealth of timber-framed houses, most of which are still well preserved, make shopping here an extra-special experience. The entire town centre is a shopping paradise, the main streets of which are Breite Strasse, Westernstrasse, Burgstrasse, Gustav Petri Strasse and Marktstrasse. The town's strength lies in the fact that shops are owned by individual proprietors, who run their businesses with pride and lend them a unique character.

Glass shop in the market square
The exhibits and products in glass manufacturer Harzkristall Derenburg's "Glasmarkt" shop originate mainly from their own range, but also include works from kindred glassworks across the whole of Europe. You can watch glass makers in action on a tour around the glassworks, located approximately 8km from the town.

Kunsthof courtyard in the market square
You can experience traditional craftsmanship "live" in the historical surroundings of the town's Kunsthof courtyard. The courtyard is an oasis of calm, where pottery, wooden toys, glassware, and hand-made Harz knitwear such as the Zipfelmütze woolly hat are made. In the smallest porcelain works in Europe, an artistic couple produce unique items under the "Hütter Porcelain" name.

Old town arcades
A wealth of gift and souvenir shops are interspersed with a wide range of shops, selling clothes, sports equipment, shoes, leather goods, homeware, accessories, cosmetics and books. The Harz mountain witch is a popular souvenir. In "Sühls Specialities" and in the Brunnenhof courtyard you can find traditional Harz treats including Harz cheese, herb-flavoured liqueurs or venison salami.
