Suggested excursions

It's not just the "colourful town in the Harz" that has lots to see and do – there are also plenty of ways to spend your free time in the surrounding area. Follow in the footsteps of the Ottonian emperors along the Romanesque Route, visit the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage town of Quedlinburg or enjoy the unique natural beauty of the Harz National Park, the choice is yours.

Romanesque Route
The "Romanesque Route" is one of Germany's most popular tourist routes. It follows a circuit of over 1,000 kilometres in an area packed with Romanesque architecture dating back to the time when Ottonian emperors ruled Saxony-Anhalt. The Romanesque Route is split into two routes and connects 60 towns with 72 Romanesque sites which bring to life the political and economical importance of this land in the Middle Ages. Castles, abbey churches and ruins are laid out ready to be explored, on hilltops and mountain sides, by rivers and in picturesque villages.

Quedlinburg
The historical town centre, with just under 1,200 timber-framed houses originating from a period of over six centuries, is one of the largest preservation areas in Germany. It was this that propelled Quedlinburg onto the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 'Must-see' sights include the Church of St. Servatius, which houses the cathedral treasury and the graves of the first German King, Heinrich I and his wife Mathilde. The ruins of the Church of St. Mary along with numerous smaller timber-framed houses can be found on the Münzenberg hill. Also well worth visiting is the thousand-year old Church of St. Wiperti with its crypt.

Upper Harz National Park
The unique mountainous landscape surrounding Mount Brocken, with forests, moors, granite cliffs and mountain streams, is a great location for relaxing times or an exciting break. Upper Harz National Park with its unrivalled tree population and numerous protected biotopes is a perfect home for red deer, wildcats and wood grouse.
